I’ve always had good luck letting my dog run around at the dog park, but I’m not really sure what to do if he gets into a fight with another dog. Is there a safe way to break up a dog fight without any of us getting hurt?
Look, first of all I’m going to assume we’re talking about an accidentally occurring dog fight and not a party at Michael Vick’s house. Because if you’re deliberately pitting dogs against one another, you deserve every bite you get.
Of course, sometimes fights just can’t be avoided. Whether you’re out for a walk in the park and your dog decides it’s go time with someone else’s canine, or the neighbor’s dog jumps the fence and turns it into Puppy Battle Royale XVI, this stuff happens.
Then how do you break it up without getting torn to shreds? The ASPCA has some good suggestions. Let’s take a look at a few of them here.
First of all, don’t panic. That’s not going to make anything better. Also, as tempting as it is, don’t grab your dog’s collar while it is fighting with another dog — he’s all worked up and not exactly thinking straight, so he may whip around and bite you reflexively.
Before attempting to grab the combatants to break them up, try one (or more) of these options:
If any (or all) of these fail to do the trick, then it’s time to wade into the fray and split the dogs up. Here are two ways to do it and stay in one piece.
Once you’ve got them apart, keep them apart. Don’t let them have another chance to go at it — don’t even let them see each other. If they’re friends, make sure they have enough time to cool down before you reintroduce them.

The big thing to keep in mind here is, if you don’t feel you can safely do something — don’t. Obviously, you have to consider how serious the fight is, how injured your dog may end up, and how injured you may end up. Taking a small bite is a fair exchange to keep your dog from being killed or seriously injured. On the other hand, do you really want to lose a finger just because some dog got a little crabby with yours? Unfortunately, that I cannot answer — that will have to be up to you.
