Times have changed since Henry Ford infamously promised of the Model T car, “A customer can have a car painted any color that he wants, so long as it is black.”
The hottest colors on the street
If a quick look on the freeway didn’t offer enough evidence for a pretty solid guess, the stats confirmed it: when it comes to what they drive, people just love their neutral colors.
According to surveys published by both DuPont Automotive Systems and PPG Industries, silver is the number one car color around the world.
The two companies group colors a little differently (for example, DuPont counts grey with white; while PPG combines those numbers with silver and charcoal), so the results aren’t quite as consistent as you would expect. Here are their worldwide study results:
DuPont vehicle color stats
Silver: 26%
Black/black effect: 24 %
White/white pearl & grey: 16% each (tie)
Red: 6%
Blue: 5%
Brown/Beige: 3%
Green: 2%
Yellow/Gold: 1%
PPG vehicle color stats
Silver, grey & charcoal: 31%
Black: 18%
White: 18%
Red: 11%
Blue: 10%
Naturals (browns, tans, golds, oranges & yellows): 8%
Green: 4%
“The palette of colors being developed for the automotive market is clearly being influenced by culture, nature, fashion, movies, media, electronics and many consumer products,” says Jane E Harrington, manager of Color Styling, Automotive Coatings at PPG.
In North America, DuPont says that white/pearl is the most popular vehicle color — though adds that is probably largely due to the fact that most fleet cars are white. It’s worth noting that, the blacks were top for the compact/sport and luxury/luxury SUV categories, while whites led the truck/SUV category.
New colors to come
What’s on the horizon in terms of car colors? Here’s what the two companies are forecasting, along with their fanciful names and descriptions.
DuPont: Treasure Chest, a copper brown with intense sparkle; Soul Mate, a deep blue pearl; Modern Macintosh, a brownish purple; and Antitoxin, a solid bright lime green.
PPG: Denim, a classic true blue with a high effect sparkle; Cognac, a rich coppery warm brown with an iridescent highlight; Moonshine Blue, a pale silvery blue like the reflection of the moon on a lake; and Wicked, a sinister green color inspired by couture fashion.
