Memorial Day is an American federal holiday that (currently) falls on the last Monday in May of each year.
Formerly known as “Decoration Day,” and a remembrance of Civil War dead, the name was changed to the current “Memorial Day” in 1882, but was not commonly observed until after World War II.
On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved Memorial Day (and three other holidays) to a specified Monday in order for each to create a three day weekend. Until that point, Memorial Day was traditionally observed on May 30th of every year.
In its modern form, Memorial Day is for remembering and recognizing those Americans who paid the ultimate sacrifice in war — and, of course, as the unofficial start of summer.
