History was here
The sites Historypin (developed in partnership with Google) and What Was There both allow you to overlay your own vintage and antique photos on top of current Google Street View map images.
You can also view thousands of other members’ submissions — along with those from national archives and other corporate contributors — all of which come together to create a sort of global trip down memory lane.
What’s especially cool is to be able to fade the old photo in and out, so you can really get a sense of what really used to be there, and how much times have changed.
Sepiatown.com is another site that allows you to upload your own vintage images to their street view maps, but they don’t currently offer the overlay feature.
