I’m going to go ahead and assume you’re talking mainly about finding the right size to fit your watch here, as the aesthetic angle is a rather subjective question. (Having said that, if you put a black rubber strap from a Timex on your Rolex Submariner, we are not friends — even if it is a Chinese copy).
These are typically measured in millimeters, however, if you don’t happen to have a ruler, measuring tape or other measuring device with a millimeter scale on it, don’t panic. You can download and print this handy lifesize PDF chart from TheWatchBarn.com, which also lists measurements in inches. There is also some helpful information there about strap length, so if you have the wrists of Conan the Barbarian, you can see if a standard band will fit or if you need an extra long one. And if you’re looking at buying or resizing an adjustable watch band, get some tips here at WatchMaterial.com.
Once you’ve figured out the measurements, all you have to do is figure out what style of watchband you want!
