The Space Fidgit
Also known as a Fidget, Figit and even “Touch me” — they were mostly green when you looked at them straight on, and more reddish/orange at an angle. It had a creamy gel-like material inside, and you could change the colors of the inside gel with pressure and angle changes.
Here’s a description we believe is from the original product packaging:
This unique plastic disc is filled with fascinating liquid crystals. Just a touch on the back causes liquid to flow into a spectacular show of changing hues and patterns.
Fun, but not durable
Unfortunately, based upon the materials used — thin plastic on the underside, and a liquid/gel on the inside — it’s likely that most of these things have not survived the decades since their heyday in the 1970s-1980s. The majority of the cute little vintage Space Fidgits are probably broken or dried up, making it very difficult to find a one in the here and now.
Difficult. But not impossible.
Fidget finding
These toys were sold through around 2005 by various small retailers — but we couldn’t find any new versions that could be purchased one at a time (outside of the hit and miss “space fidgit” stock on eBay and at TimeWarp Toys).
The good news: We did find a current source for Fidgits.
The bad news: You’ll have to spend more than $700.
The good news: You’ll get 250 of these babies for that price.
Why? Strangely enough, the only modern source we could find for these toys is a company who is marketing Fidgits as custom-imprinted promotional giveaway items. You can see them at US Imprints.
You’re not alone
We will leave you with the knowledge that you are one of many, many people seeking out these retro toys. As someone posted on the In the ’70s message board dedicated to the Great Fidgit, “I feel as though I have just seen Rosebud! …I have been trolling the internet for years trying to find one of these.”
