How can you avoid gas from Mexican food? Please — my family begs you. How can I have my tacos and eat them too without becoming a danger to all air-breathing life around me?
A little earlier in the evening you scarfed down a plate of enchiladas and all the trimmings — refried beans, rice, the lot. Now you feel about the size of a hot air balloon and everyone within 30 feet of you is looking for a gas mask and the number for the EPA to report a new Superfund site.
Fortunately for you — and your friends and family, we know what it is that causes that lovely gas buildup and eruption, so you can avoid and prevent it.
It’s no secret that eating beans cause gas. It’s also no secret that beans are a rather common item in Mexican meals. So one of the things you can do is take a pass on the beans to keep from passing gas later — substitute rice or veggies, they’re less likely to make you into a methane factory.
Here are a few of the most common gas-producing foods, according to the NYU Langone Medical Center:
Many of these, you may notice, are on the carb-heavy side, though they are by no means the only gas-inducing foods. Corn, potatoes, pasta, and wheat can all cause gas to build up in the large intestine. Foods containing lactose can bloat you up as well — things like milk, cheese, and so on, even if you aren’t truly lactose intolerant.
NYU Langone also notes that, “Some medicines, particularly cholesterol-lowering medicines, are associated with increased gas production.”
Of course, sometimes cutting out the foods that make you flatulent just isn’t an option — you can’t or just don’t want to. That’s fine. You can try using products like Beano, which help you break down the carbs in many gassy foods (and not only beans).
Another thing you can do is avoid fatty foods. Fat slows down digestion, allowing food to ferment while sitting in the queue to get off the bus, so to speak. Fermentation produces gas.
Also try to slow down when you’re eating. Eating quickly can often cause you to swallow air, which can lead to that gassy, bloated feeling where you feel like you’re about to become Mister Creosote.
Finally, try getting up and taking a walk after dinner, or just get up and clean the kitchen. Moving around can help move the gas through your system and prevent that awful bloated feeling.
