I am looking for an affordable way — and one that’s not totally complicated — to be able to accept occasional credit card payments for my small business. Any suggestions?

Sure, you could contact your bank and spend $300 (or more) on one of those card swipe terminal machines and look super professional… of course, you still have to have the card and the terminal present at the same time. Which — if your business is either online, or if it’s one where you need to take payments in the field — is all but useless. So what to do?
Well, if you take most of your payments on-site with your clients/customers (or you’d like to) and you own an iPhone or Android smartphone, you should absolutely consider using Square.
Square gives you a free card reader you plug right into the headphone port on your phone, costs nothing per month, and only takes 2.75% of the total transaction as a fee. And admit it… you’d look pretty cool saying, “Yes, I take cards” — and whipping out your phone and card swiper. It also generates a receipt for your customer and for you, which is about 1.7 million times easier and more convenient than writing one out on a napkin for a cash transaction.
Since this question was first answered in 2011, several more companies have entered the marketplace, most notably:
PayPal Here: A mobile payment solution that includes a free app and a thumb-sized card reader for your iPhone, Android or iPad device
Intuit GoPayment: Swipe, key, or take a photo of the credit card information on your mobile phone for processing.
Flint: Securely scan the card instead of swiping it through a card reader or dongle. (A hand-keyed entry mode is also supported.)
There are also a couple other merchant services specifically targeted to small business. The first comes from NCR (the people who invented the cash register), and is called NCR Silver Point of Sale. You might also want to look into Revel Systems’ mobile point-of-sale software.
If you’re selling online, you should also take a look at Amazon Payments. They offer services that help merchants by making it easy for millions of Amazon customers to buy from your website.
