Don’t walk the plank
Ahh, kids these days with their video games and their youtube and their… lying down? Yep. Planking is nothing more than the practice of lying face down, hands at your sides, mimicing a wooden plank. This is usually performed in an odd or unusual place, such as on railings, street lights, sign posts, famous landmarks, and so on.
Where the heck did this come from?
Planking has its roots in the “Lying Down Game” (also known as “lazy parkour“) which originated in England in the late 1990s. The game consists of, well, lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location — preferably in as public a location as possible, with as many people watching as possible. Pictures are then taken and posted on the internet for all to share.
I never said it had a point.
Planking itself originated in Australia, with the main difference (as far as I can tell) being the requirement that the participant be as stiff as a board. This is usually accentuated by choosing a location to plank that doesn’t support the entire body.
The — uh — sport took off in popularity, oddly enough, after the May 15, 2011 death of Acton Beale, a 20-year-old man who plummeted to his death from a seventh story balcony in Brisbane, Australia while planking. The story gained worldwide attention, as did planking itself.
During the numerous rain delays that plagued the practice days for the 2011 Indianapolis 500, several drivers took to having a planking contest in various locations around the speedway, with the results posted on Twitter for all to see.
Be safe
