Using Windows, you can take a shot of the entire screen by pressing the “Prt Scr” (short for “Print Screen”) key, usually in the top row of keys on a standard keyboard, to the right of the “F” keys (F1-F12). This will place the screen’s image in your computer’s clipboard, allowing you to paste it into an application such as Word or Paint. Pressing ALT+”Prt Scr” will copy only the top-most current window.
In Linux, most window managers (such as Gnome or KDE) provide their own applications for taking screenshots; look in the main menu’s “Utilities” or “Accessories” section for a screen capture program. In a default Ubuntu installation, this application can be found by clicking the Gnome menu (the one with the little Ubuntu logo in the upper-left corner), selecting “Accessories” and choosing the “Take Screenshot” option. A window will open with choices:

If you use Google’s free image tool/organizer Picasa, and you have the program open, pressing your computer’s Print Screen button will immediately save an image of your current view to a folder in Picasa called “Screen Captures.”
