GoogleFaceSpace
Yes, at its core, Google+ is a new social networking site, like Facebook or MySpace. Or Friendster, if you’re old-school enough to remember that. However, Google+ differentiates itself from its competitors with a couple unique features. Feeling that services like Twitter and Facebook are unsuccessful with friend lists, since they are not an integrated part of the service and more of a “tack-on” product, Google+ looks to improve by allowing you to target your sharing with various social groups, instead of the “broadcast” approach on other sites by using a system called “Circles.”
Say you have new photos of your kids you would like to share with your family. Only share with the people in your “Family” circle, and not with the “People I Barely Remember From High School” circle, or the “I Got Drunk With These People One Night And Gave Them My Email Address” circle. Yes, you can, of course, create and name your own circles — and those may or may not be taken from ones in your own Google+ account.
There are a whole bunch of other neat features like video chat, “Hangouts,” a form of group chat, and more. For much more information and a fancypants interactive tour, check out the Google+ demo.
OK, great. How do I get in?
As of this writing, Google+ is still in a “field trial period,” meaning it’s invitation only. So, you need to do two things.
1: Make sure you have a Gmail account. Invitations (at this time) only seem to work with Gmail addresses. If you’re not already using Gmail… why not?
2: Pester all your friends and see if any of them have an account already.
2(a): If you’re the more patient sort, you can simply go to plus.google.com and sign up to be notified when registration opens up.
How do I invite people?
Follow these steps while in Google+:
1: Create a post. Something that explains that the post is being used to invite them to Google+.
2: Invite them by email by typing their email address directly into the box under what you want to share, where it says +Add more people.
3: Hit Share.
Note: Invites are rate limited by hour, so if you or your friends can’t click through that first time, try again later with same link. It took me about a day worth of trying till I got the lucky click and got in — your mileage may vary.
