Here are some of the sites I have found most helpful in my own genealogical searches, and a few others I’ve discovered but have not yet tried.
Find your roots on the web
FamilySearch.org
Billed as the largest genealogy organization in the world, it’s free to access their resources and online services.
Ancestry.com
A great research resource, with great collections of old census data and military draft records. (You can also connect your genealogy data via the PC program Family Tree Maker.) Some services are free, but most access is for paid members only.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk
FreeBMD is a work in progress, transcribing the civil registration indexed of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales. Free.
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca
Library and Archives Canada offers access to most of its digitized historical and genealogy information.
http://www.thatsmyfamily.info
This free search tool, available in French and English, leads you to genealogy and family history databases hosted by archives centres and libraries.
footnote.com
Original source documents via partnerships with The National Archives, the Library of Congress and other institutions. 64 million records are currently online, and includes Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWII and Vietnam War collections. Paid membership needed to access much of the site.
genlighten.com
This site offers a different way to get the documents you may be looking for — via their network of people at locations around the world. They will help you find someone to search and retrieve records or other information that may be just the missing piece you need.
